Greek government pledges 100% hailstorm compensation in Larissa
A violent hailstorm struck the Larissa prefecture in central Greece, heavily damaging crops in the villages of Platanoulia, Damas, Domeniko, Terpithea and surrounding areas. Government officials – ND MP and Deputy Minister of Agricultural Development and Food Christos Kellas, ND MP Maximos Charakopoulos and Thessaly Regional Governor Dimitris Kouretas – visited the affected sites and announced a coordinated response.
The plan includes immediate field inspections by ELGA teams, opening of damage‑claim submissions from 27 July to 10 August 2026, and a legal measure to guarantee 100 % compensation of the insured value while removing the previous payout ceiling. Farmers will receive advance payments of 65 % of the estimated loss. Authorities are also requesting an EU special financing tool for repeatedly hit regions and are studying permanent anti‑hail protection measures such as networks and long‑term resilience programmes.
Officials stressed that no farmer will be left alone and pledged continuous communication until all claims are settled.
