Chrononutrition research links meal timing to metabolic health

Emerging research in the field of chrononutrition suggests that the timing of meals is as critical to health as the nutritional content of the food itself. Studies indicate that aligning food consumption with the body’s internal circadian rhythm can significantly impact weight management, blood sugar regulation, and cardiovascular health.

Research led by Marta Garaulet at the University of Murcia observed that individuals who consumed larger meals earlier in the day, such as an earlier lunch, experienced more effective weight loss compared to those eating later. Furthermore, eating during periods when the body prepares for sleep can cause ‘circadian misalignment.’ For instance, consuming glucose shortly before sleep results in less efficient glucose management and lower insulin production compared to consuming it several hours earlier.

Frank Scheer, a professor at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, notes that biological processes differ between morning and evening. Late-night eating can disrupt appetite-regulating hormones like leptin, potentially increasing hunger the following day and encouraging fat storage rather than fat breakdown.
