Chubu Electric leadership to resign over Hamaoka nuclear data fraud
Chubu Electric Power's top leadership is set to resign following a data fraud scandal involving the Hamaoka nuclear power plant. President Kingo Hayashi and Chairman Satoru Katsuno have both indicated their intention to step down to take responsibility for misconduct related to seismic design data.
The scandal involves the falsification of earthquake vibration data used to seek regulatory approval for restarting Units 3 and 4 at the Hamaoka plant. Consequently, the company has withdrawn its safety review applications for these reactors. The misconduct is alleged to have begun as early as 2012.
In addition to the seismic data issues, Chubu Electric faces scrutiny over other irregularities, including improper billing for the decommissioning of Units 1 and 2, and an incident where customers were overcharged by approximately 1.2 billion yen across 5 million contracts. The Nuclear Regulation Authority has suspended safety reviews for the affected reactors as the company addresses these compounded regulatory and reputational challenges.
