Chungcheongbuk-do leads South Korea in Q2 2026 economic growth

Chungcheongbuk-do recorded the highest real Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) growth rate in South Korea for the second quarter of 2026, increasing by 11.9% compared to the same period last year. This significantly outperformed the national average growth rate of 3.7%.

The growth was primarily driven by the manufacturing sector, which expanded by 22.4% due to strong production in semiconductors, electronic components, and electrical equipment. Additionally, the construction sector grew by 5.2%, fueled by the development of non-residential buildings such as offices, factories, and warehouses, even as national construction production declined.

Despite industrial strength, the service sector saw modest growth of 0.8%, and retail sales have faced challenges. Recent data indicates a three-month decline in retail sales at large stores, with decreases noted in department stores and hypermarkets, reflecting a slowdown in consumer spending.
