Korea-China trade expansion and semiconductor growth
Overview
In June 2024, South Korea’s customs service reported monthly exports topping $1 trillion, driven largely by a $400 billion semiconductor haul. Trade with China accounted for the bulk of the export surge, while China’s own customs data showed a 27% rise in exports and a widening trade surplus. During the first half of 2024, North Korea’s trade with China reached $15.7 billion, up 19.6% year-on-year. By August 2024, South Korean exports saw a 45.3% increase, fueled by a 155.4% surge in semiconductor exports driven by artificial intelligence (AI) demand. By July 2026, South Korea reported record-breaking exports of $99 billion, with semiconductor exports totaling $41.2 billion.
In August 2026, Moody's significantly raised its economic growth forecast for South Korea to 3.5%, nearly doubling its February prediction of 1.8%. The agency attributed this revision to a “semiconductor supercycle” and robust export performance, noting that chip demand remains high and that there are “limited companies capable of realistically replacing South Korean suppliers of advanced memory chips.”
Momentum in the sector is further evidenced by Samsung Electronics, which saw contract liabilities increase by 56.4% as of June due to long-term memory chip supply agreements. This growth has led the Korea Development Institute (KDI) to raise its 2024 growth forecast from 2.5% to 3.2%.
Despite this boom, economic benefits remain uneven. While the semiconductor sector thrives, growth has not fully permeated the labor and household sectors. South Korea's household credit reached a record high of 2,007.8 trillion won in the second quarter, driven by housing loans and stock market investments, prompting discussions regarding potential interest rate hikes by the Bank of Korea. Moody's also warned of long-term fiscal pressures caused by an aging population, increased defense spending, and the necessity of continued investment to maintain competitiveness.
