Church of Greece revokes honorary distinction for former Metropolitan Ambrose

The Church of Greece has unanimously decided to revoke a previously approved honorary distinction for Ambrose, the former Metropolitan of Kalavryta and Aigialeia. The decision was made during the 170th Synodal Period of the Standing Holy Synod, presided over by Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens.

On August 26, the previous composition of the Standing Holy Synod had voted to award Ambrose the Golden Cross with Star of the Insignia of the Apostle Paul to mark his fifty years of priesthood. This award was scheduled to be presented on October 6.

However, the current Synod reversed this decision following a recent letter sent by Ambrose to the members of the new 170th Synodal Period. The Synod characterized the content of his letter as “offensive” to the body of the Standing Holy Synod and the Holy Synod of the Hierarchy of the Church of Greece.
