Church of Greece dispute involving Metropolitan Ambrose

Overview

On August 26, 2026, the Standing Holy Synod of the Church of Greece decided to award Metropolitan Ambrose, the former Metropolitan of Kalavryta and Aigialeia, the Golden Cross with Star of the Insignia of Apostle Paul. This honor was intended to recognize his fifty years of episcopal service and was scheduled for presentation on October 6.

By September 10, 2026, the Synod unanimously reversed its decision and revoked the honorary distinction. This reversal followed a letter sent by Ambrose to the members of the 170th Synodal Period, which the Synod characterized as “offensive” to the Standing Holy Synod and the Holy Synod of the Hierarchy of the Church of Greece.
