Ciane and Saline Nature Reserve fire sparks calls for better oversight

Following a fire reported at the Ciane and Saline Nature Reserve on August 25, the civic committee ‘Progresso e Legalità’ has demanded transparency regarding the site's management and surveillance. The committee is questioning the Libero Consorzio Comunale di Siracusa, the managing body, about the specific organizational structure, the number of personnel assigned to monitoring, shift schedules, and the effectiveness of fire prevention measures.

The committee highlighted that the Sicilian Region has allocated approximately 259,394 euros for 2026 to fund personnel dedicated to the reserve's surveillance. They are seeking clarification on how these resources are being utilized and whether adequate inspections and maintenance are being performed. The group criticized the current administrative approach, suggesting that local governance often prioritizes image and tourism promotion over effective territory management and environmental protection.
