Ciane and Saline Nature Reserve management disputes

Management of the Ciane and Saline Nature Reserve in Syracuse has come under scrutiny following legislative proposals and environmental incidents.

Regional deputy Giuseppe Carta proposed a new law to reform the reserve’s management by creating a permanent consultation committee. This model aims to include environmental associations, local entities, and citizens to balance ecosystem protection with sustainable tourism. However, environmental groups such as Comitato Parchi and LIPU criticized the proposal, arguing that the reserve requires accountability and a resolution to environmental crises rather than more committees, which they claim may blur lines of responsibility.

Tensions regarding oversight intensified after a fire was reported at the reserve on August 25. The civic committee ‘Progresso e Legalità’ has demanded transparency from the managing body, the Libero Consorzio Comunale di Siracusa. The committee is questioning the allocation of approximately 259,394 euros designated for surveillance personnel in 2026, seeking clarification on staffing, shift schedules, and the effectiveness of fire prevention measures.
