CIDH grants measures for detained activist Daniel Echenagucia

The Inter‑American Commission on Human Rights (CIDH) adopted precautionary measures in favor of Italian‑Venezuelan political prisoner Daniel Enrique Echenagucia Vallenilla. The resolution (No. 46/2026, reference MC‑892‑26) was adopted on 21 June and notified on 22 June 2026, invoking article 25 of the CIDH’s Regulation. The measures call on Venezuelan authorities to protect his life and physical integrity and to ensure his detention conditions comply with international human‑rights standards.

Echenagucia has been held in Venezuela since 2 August 2024, approaching two years of detention that NGOs label arbitrary. The request for protection was submitted by the human‑rights organization Foro Penal, represented by lawyer Gonzalo Himiob, and the notification was signed by CIDH Deputy Executive Secretary María Claudia Pulido. International and regional human‑rights groups have been monitoring the case amid concerns over procedural irregularities and prison conditions.
