Cilento tourism boost and green initiatives fuel summer economy

Summer brings a surge of visitors to Cilento’s coast from Agropoli to Sapri, with beaches such as Palinuro and Marina di Camerota among Italy’s most photographed. The influx, driven mainly by domestic tourists but increasingly by foreign arrivals, fuels the bulk of the local economy, supporting hotels, B&Bs, campsites, restaurants and ancillary sectors such as agriculture and crafts.

Local entrepreneurs are promoting green mobility to attract more overseas visitors. Since 2017, the agency Discover Cilento Viaggi offers electric bikes, scooters and an electric shuttle, positioning Cilento as a low‑overtourism alternative to the Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre. The strategy aims to extend the summer season, diversify the tourism offer and sustain year‑round economic growth.
