Cinanima International Animation Film Festival begins 50th edition

The Cinanima International Animation Film Festival has launched its 50th anniversary edition in Espinho, Portugal. The commemorative event features 167 films selected for competition, alongside 226 additional works shown through parallel initiatives including exhibitions, cine-concerts, masterclasses, and school programs.

Programmer André Ramada noted that this year's selection showcases diverse and innovative techniques, ranging from films made with coffee foam to those painted on tiles or hand-embroidered. While themes of past trauma and future concerns remain present, the festival observes a shift toward comedy and a sense of carefree acceptance compared to previous years.

The 17-day program extends across the Aveiro district and the Porto Metropolitan Area. This edition, themed “The Dream Commands Life,” pays tribute to designer and illustrator João Machado and film critic Henrique Alves Costa.
