Circularis association calls for 12 billion euros to boost Spanish recycling
A new business association, Circularis, has been formed by Urbaser, FCCenviro, PreZero, and Valoriza to drive circular economy and recycling efforts in Spain. The group aims to help the country meet European Union waste management targets for 2030 and 2035, which include reducing landfill use to below 20% by 2030 and below 10% by 2035, while increasing recycling rates to 60% and 65%, respectively.
Ricardo López de Haro, president of Circularis, stated that Spain requires investments exceeding 12,000 million euros to achieve these European commitments. The association focuses on improving source separation, recycling, and energy recovery to reduce structural dependence on landfills.
In related regional developments, the Balearic Islands government has received 46 applications for circular economy projects totaling approximately 18.8 million euros, primarily targeting waste management and eco-design. Additionally, in Galicia, the public-private initiative Citexgal has been launched to promote circularity within the textile sector through eco-design and waste prevention. Meanwhile, AMBIENVASES is working to assist producers in adapting to the new European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which introduces stricter requirements for recyclability and reused content.
