Circular economy and waste management initiatives

Efforts to advance circular economy principles and waste management have expanded from educational outreach to legislative and technological implementation.

Initial initiatives focused on environmental education, such as the ‘Horizonte 2030’ strategy in Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, and the ‘Los Plásticos en tu Vida’ fair in Mexico City. Recent developments show a shift toward structural measures. In Spain, progress includes the finalization of a national Deposit, Return, and Refund System (SDDR) and the emergence of chemical recycling projects capable of breaking down plastics at a molecular level. Localized efforts have increased, such as new textile waste collection contracts in Alicante and improved paper disposal systems in El Puerto de Santa María.

On a continental level, the European Commission is preparing a future Circular Economy Law, expected by 2026, which emphasizes resource efficiency, product repairability, and the availability of high-quality secondary materials. European Commissioner Jessika Roswall has engaged with youth representatives to discuss these proposals.

New regional programs continue to drive awareness through exchange and educational models. In Bolivia, the ‘Eco Entrada’ program allows citizens to exchange recyclables for access to the Expocruz 2026 fair, while the Autonomous Municipal Government of El Alto (GAMEA) is organizing ‘Ecotrueque’ campaigns. In Honduras, the ‘Cajas Verdes’ initiative in Tegucigalpa uses interactive activities to teach environmental protection. In Spain, the ‘Muy nuestro’ campaign in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria utilizes workshops to improve waste separation.

Corporate implementation in Spain has also intensified. Viena Capellanes has approved a Food Waste Reduction Plan to align with Law 1/2025, aiming for a 5% reduction in food waste at stores compared to 2025 levels. Meanwhile, El Corte Inglés reported an 8.9% reduction in global plastic packaging use compared to 2024, noting that 100% of its food area packaging is now designed to be recyclable, reusable, or compostable.
