Cisl calls for structural workplace safety reforms amid rising accident rates

Daniela Fumarola, General Secretary of Cisl, has called for structural improvements to workplace prevention following alarming data from Inail. In 2025, there were 1,198 reported fatal workplace accidents and 98,312 cases of occupational disease, the latter being the highest level in 26 years.

In the first seven months of 2026, reported deaths reached 582, with workplace accidents increasing by nearly 5 percent and occupational diseases rising by 16.6 percent. Fumarola emphasized that prevention must become a structural policy, particularly addressing fragmented supply chains and excessive subcontracting.

To address these trends, Fumarola proposed three urgent priorities: allocating Inail management surpluses to specific risk training—especially for small and micro-enterprises—strengthening worker safety representatives, and increasing the staff of labor inspectorates.
