Cisl Scuola demands action against extreme heat in Italian classrooms

Cisl Scuola Emilia Centrale is calling for institutional action to address extreme heat in Italian classrooms, which have reached temperatures between 32 and 36 degrees Celsius. Ciro Fiore, deputy general secretary of the union, has criticized the current reliance on 'do-it-yourself' solutions, such as families purchasing fans or municipalities providing portable air conditioners, labeling these measures insufficient for a structural climate issue.

The union is demanding the establishment of an institutional working group coordinated by the Province to manage climate wellbeing in schools. They are specifically requesting a thermal mapping of school buildings to identify critical classrooms, exposure risks, and ventilation needs.

Cisl emphasizes that these measures are a matter of safety and educational quality. Citing Inail guidelines, which suggest an ideal temperature range of 25-27 degrees Celsius and a maximum threshold of 28 degrees, the union warns that classrooms exceeding 30 degrees Celsius are neither safe nor conducive to learning and work.
