While Minister Valditara clarified that individual regions retain authority over their own academic calendars, the Sicilian regional government has opted against a generalized postponement. Instead, the administration is granting autonomy to individual school boards to decide on start dates based on local conditions, provided they meet minimum teaching requirements. Local leaders have criticized these measures as insufficient. Maurizio Franzò, president of the National Association of Principals (ANP) in Sicily, argued that postponing classes is a “short-sighted measure” and called for structural energy regeneration, including photovoltaic systems and air conditioning. Additionally, Ottavio Zacco, president of the productive activities commission, advocated for a massive regional funding plan to ensure climate control and electrical upgrades to protect the health of students and staff. Expanding the debate, the Cisl Scuola Emilia Centrale union has called for institutional action as classroom temperatures reach between 32 and 36 degrees Celsius.
