Ciudad Juárez health officials warn of food safety risks during heat

The Secretariat of Health in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, has issued a warning regarding food preparation and conservation due to rising temperatures. Health officials noted an increase in acute diarrheal diseases during hot seasons, often caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites in contaminated or decomposing food.

Dr. Roberto Suárez warned that improper handling of fruits and vegetables, as well as poor hand hygiene, are primary causes. Such infections can lead to significant loss of water and electrolytes, potentially resulting in dehydration. High-risk groups include children under five, older adults, and individuals with multiple underlying health conditions.

Preventative measures recommended include frequent hand washing, proper food storage, and maintaining adequate hydration. Residents are also advised to stay in cool environments and avoid direct sun exposure, particularly between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM.
