Ciudad Juárez officials condemn vehicle display at Campo Algodonero Memorial
Municipal President Héctor Ortiz Orpinel has condemned a car dealership for using the Campo Algodonero Memorial in Ciudad Juárez as a venue for a vehicle exhibition. Following the incident, the Road Safety Coordination removed the vehicles, and the Urban Development department notified the agency that they must appear before the department to address the matter. Ortiz described the act as a lack of respect and an affront to the community, noting that such memorials exist to ensure tragic events are not forgotten.
Local women's rights activists, including members of the Red Mesa de Mujeres and Colectivas de Comunidad y Equidad, also criticized the commercial use of the site. Activists emphasized that the memorial was established following an Inter-American Commission on Human Rights ruling regarding feminicides in the area and the discovery of bodies in 2001. They argued the space should serve as a site for memory, respect, and sensitization rather than commercialization.
