Memorial desecration controversies in Ciudad Juárez

In Ciudad Juárez, activists and local officials have raised concerns regarding the perceived disrespect of memorials dedicated to victims of femicide and disappearance.

In mid-August, activist mothers from collectives such as ‘Justicia para Nuestras Hijas’ protested after political propaganda for the Morena party and candidate Omar García Palomares was painted over a 2019 memorial mural. The mural featured the faces of 16 women and girls, and activists are demanding the images be restored to honor the victims.

By early September, controversy emerged regarding the Campo Algodonero Memorial. Municipal President Héctor Ortiz Orpinel condemned a car dealership for using the site as a venue for a vehicle exhibition. Local women’s rights groups, including the Red Mesa de Mujeres, criticized the commercialization of the space, noting that the memorial was established following an Inter-American Commission on Human Rights ruling to ensure tragic events are not forgotten.
