Mérida prepares for Janal Pixan festivities and Mucbipollo Fair
Mérida is preparing for the Day of the Dead festivities, with significant cultural and gastronomic events scheduled in the San Sebastián neighborhood. The 9th Mucbipollo Fair, part of the Ayuntamiento de Mérida’s Janal Pixan Festival, is set for October 25. The event features 18 exhibitors offering various versions of the traditional pib (mucbipollo), including pork, chicken, lechón negro, and cochinita. Prices for portions are listed around 115 to 120 pesos.
Key highlights of the fair include a demonstration of the traditional underground cooking process known as the ‘entierro del pib,’ a Mayan ancestral practice. The celebration will include a Mayan house, death altars, and floral arches. Additionally, the city is decorating its historic center, including San Juan Park, with monumental skulls, light arches, and approximately 200 lanterns to honor the season.
