Cultural festivals in Mérida
Overview
Mérida is preparing for the Desfile de Catrinas, a central component of the Festival de las Ánimas scheduled for October 31. The parade is expected to attract over 55,000 attendees and will follow a 1.7-kilometer route from Plaza Grande to Gran Parque de La Plancha. The procession will involve approximately 300 participants across 30 contingents, featuring a nearly four-meter-tall monumental Catrina, mojigangas, Mexican music, and a Pok ta Pok performance. A Monumental Mexican Altar will also be installed at the end of Paseo de Montejo.
In addition to the parade, the city is organizing the Janal Pixan Festival. The 9th Mucbipollo Fair was held on October 25 in the San Sebastián neighborhood, inaugurated by Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada. The fair featured 18 vendors—16 from Mérida and two from the state's interior—offering approximately 3,000 cans of pib (mucbipollo). Varieties included pork, chicken, castacán, lechón negro, and cochinita, with individual portions priced between 115 and 120 pesos. The event included the ‘entierro del pib,’ a demonstration of the ancestral Mayan practice of underground cooking, alongside live music and folk dance.
To honor the season, the historic center and San Juan Park are being decorated with monumental skulls, light arches, and approximately 200 lanterns. Local authorities have also encouraged businesses in the Calle 47 Gastronomic Corridor to participate by decorating their establishments to promote regional Mexican traditions.
