Civil Public Education Platform proposes Hungarian school reform

The Civil Public Education Platform (CKP) has submitted proposals to the Ministry of Education and Youth regarding a potential overhaul of the Hungarian school system. The CKP argues that the current model relies on excessive centralization and early academic branching, which they claim deepens social inequalities and forces premature career choices on students.

The platform proposes a unified school structure based on either a 10-year or 12-year model. In a 12-year model, students would only enter higher education or vocational training after completing secondary school. A 10-year model would involve a unified basic education followed by a two-year specialization phase.

To support this transition, the CKP recommends several immediate measures, including raising the compulsory school age to 18 and increasing the duration of non-maturating vocational training to four years. They also advocate for breaking down the barriers between different educational levels, such as the transitions between nursery, kindergarten, and primary school.
