Hungarian education reform proposals by CKP
Overview
The Civil Közoktatási Platform (CKP) has proposed a comprehensive overhaul of the Hungarian public education system to address issues of centralization and social inequality.
The platform’s strategy advocates for a unified school structure, suggesting either a 10-year or 12-year model to replace the current system of six- and eight-grade secondary schools. This shift aims to eliminate early student selection that often separates children based on socioeconomic backgrounds at ages 10 to 12. To support this, the CKP recommends raising the compulsory school age to 18 and extending non-maturating vocational training to four years.
Further recommendations include replacing the traditional 1–5 numerical grading system with continuous, qualitative textual feedback to focus on individual development. The proposal also calls for reducing rigid national curricula to provide teachers and schools with greater autonomy over local teaching content and rhythms.
