Civilization VII offered for free on Steam for one week

To celebrate the 35th anniversary of the franchise, Firaxis Games and publisher 2K are offering a free play week for Sid Meier’s Civilization VII on Steam. The promotion allows players to access the full version of the 4X strategy game, including single-player and multiplayer modes, until September 10, 2026.

This trial period follows a period of mixed reception for the game's 2025 release, particularly regarding its three-era structure and civilization transition mechanics. Developers have since released the ‘Test of Time’ update to address player feedback, allowing users to maintain their original civilization throughout a campaign.

Alongside the free access, the game is currently available at a 50% discount on Steam through September 17. Additionally, 2K has announced the ‘Earthrise’ expansion DLC, which introduces space exploration and missions within the solar system, as well as a planned large-scale free update titled ‘Arc of Tomorrow’ scheduled for 2027.
