Sid Meier’s Civilization VII development and promotion
Overview
Firaxis Games has initiated promotional and developmental phases for Sid Meier’s Civilization VII. To mark the franchise’s 35th anniversary, a limited-time free trial was made available on Steam through September 10, 2026, alongside a 50% discount on various editions available through September 17.
Following a period of mixed reception regarding the game’s three-era structure, developers released the ‘Test of Time’ update to allow players to maintain their original civilization throughout a campaign.
During a panel at PAX West, Firaxis and 2K detailed a roadmap for 2027, headlined by the ‘Arc of Tomorrow’ free update and the ‘Earthrise’ paid expansion. The ‘Arc of Tomorrow’ update will introduce the Atomic Age—a fourth era spanning from the 1950s to approximately 2050—featuring new technologies, civic principles, and nuclear warfare mechanics related to mutual assured destruction. This update will also include the return of the leader Gandhi, the ability to manage independent settlements as City-States, and new features such as modern urban architecture, the ‘Great Works of Film’ system, and multilateral diplomatic agreements.
The ‘Earthrise’ expansion will focus on space exploration, allowing players to manage space agencies and missions within the solar system. This expansion is expected to introduce environmental mechanics to address challenges such as global warming and natural disasters, as well as mechanics in the Antiquity and Exploration eras that allow players to map stars and alter imperial terrain.
In the immediate term, version 1.5.0 is expected later in September 2026. This update will include quality-of-life improvements, the ‘True Start Location: Earth’ map, new Voronoi maps, and enhancements to resource generation, diplomacy, and the user interface.
