Bolsena and Bagnoregio named Italian Capital of Contemporary Art 2028

Bolsena and Civita di Bagnoregio have been named the Italian Capital of Contemporary Art for 2028. The selection, announced by Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli, chose their joint project, ‘Arte che viene, arte che va’, over finalists including Capri, Padova, and Pozzuoli.

The designation includes a one million euro contribution to implement a cultural program designed to integrate contemporary art with historical heritage, landscape, and community participation. The project aims to involve 10,000 students and international artists to foster local economic development and tourism.

To celebrate the announcement, the two municipalities organized a sustainable mobility event on October 17, 2026, featuring a bicycle ride from both towns to meet at the Turona Naturalistic Archaeological Park. The initiative was also presented at the Chamber of Deputies to highlight its potential for regional regeneration and international visibility.
