Italian Capital of Contemporary Art designations

Overview

The Italian Capital of Contemporary Art designation has been awarded to different municipalities to promote social regeneration and cultural heritage through art.

In October 2026, Gibellina in Sicily was named the first Italian Capital of Contemporary Art for 2026. Under the project ‘Portami il futuro’ (Bring me the future), the initiative seeks to use art to combat depopulation and integrate creative expression into the daily lives of residents.

Subsequently, Bolsena and Civita di Bagnoregio were selected as the Italian Capitals of Contemporary Art for 2028. Announced by Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli, their joint project, ‘Arte che viene, arte che va’ (Art that comes, art that goes), received a one million euro contribution to integrate contemporary art with historical landscapes and community participation.

Rather than a temporary event, the 2028 initiative aims to establish a permanent cultural infrastructure and a stable governance network through institutional partnerships. The program expects to leave a legacy of approximately 35 material works and involves educational outreach targeting 10,000 students to foster a long-term understanding of contemporary art within the Tuscia region.
