Civitavecchia offshore wind project receives environmental approval
The offshore wind project off the coast of Civitavecchia has received official approval following a positive Environmental Impact Assessment (VIA) from the Ministry of the Environment. The project, promoted by Tyrrhenian Wind Energy, involves the installation of 28 floating turbines located approximately 22 kilometers from the coast. Each turbine has a capacity of 18 MW, resulting in a total power output of 504 MW and an expected annual production of 1,700 GWh.
This development marks a significant shift in the region's energy strategy, moving away from fossil fuels following the decommissioning of the local coal-fired power plant. Local political groups and community organizations view this as a victory for the energy transition, though they emphasize that the project should be integrated into a broader industrial hub. This vision includes transforming Civitavecchia into a “hydrogen valley” featuring green hydrogen conversion, battery storage, and solar-powered port facilities to drive local employment and industrial growth.
