Clashes in Pakistan-administered Kashmir kill 11 before refugee-seat protest

Violent clashes erupted in Rawalakot, Pakistan-administered Kashmir on Sunday as armed supporters of the outlawed Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) opened fire on security forces. The fighting, which surrounded the Combined Military Hospital and disrupted services, left at least 11 people dead – including security personnel, protesters and a passer‑by – and dozens wounded. Police reported 23 security officials and about 50 protesters injured, with 30 arrests made.

The violence followed a Supreme Court ruling that the 12 legislative seats reserved for Kashmiri refugees in Pakistan cannot be abolished without a constitutional amendment. The court’s decision came after a presidential reference and ahead of a JAAC‑organised rally slated for June 9, demanding greater political rights and the removal of the refugee seats. The regional government has banned the JAAC under anti‑terror legislation and advised tourists to leave the area before the planned demonstration. Normal hospital operations and public services were restored after the security forces dispersed the crowd.
