Islamic communities in Austria reject blanket suspicions from Minister Bauer

Ten Islamic religious communities under the umbrella of the Islamic Community of Austria (IGGÖ) have issued a joint statement rejecting what they call ‘blanket suspicions’ following comments by Austrian Chancellor's Office Minister Claudia Bauer (ÖVP). The communities criticized Bauer for not ruling out a ban on the IGGÖ in a recent interview without providing concrete evidence.

The IGGÖ, which is a legally recognized religious society representing Muslims in Austria, stated that such rhetoric does not meet the standards of a constitutional state. The communities emphasized their commitment to the constitution and the rule of law, noting that their 300+ mosques nationwide cooperate with state authorities on prevention, imam training, and social cohesion. They demanded respect and verifiable facts regarding any claims of radicalization.

Minister Bauer subsequently softened her stance, stating in an interview that a ban on the IGGÖ is ‘not on the table.’ However, she maintained that because the IGGÖ comprises various organizations, individual representatives could still exhibit radical tendencies.
