Austria debates increased state oversight of religious education
Austrian Integration Minister Claudia Bauer is advocating for increased state oversight of religious education in schools. Bauer argues that the current system, where religious communities manage content and instructors, leaves the state ‘blind in one eye’ regarding what is being taught and by whom. She specifically highlighted concerns regarding Islamic religious studies, citing reports from parents who fear indoctrination and withdraw their children from classes despite their religious affiliation.
Education Minister Christoph Wiederkehr expressed openness to discussing more state control but cautioned that transferring professional supervision from religious organizations to the state is not ‘constitutionally trivial.’ He noted that existing international agreements, such as those with the Vatican, and constitutional protections for religious freedom must be respected. He emphasized that all teachers must adhere to the laws and fundamental values of the Republic, including principles of gender equality.
The proposal aligns with the government's program to establish religion-independent school supervision. However, political opposition has emerged, with Green Party spokesperson Sigi Maurer criticizing the minister for lacking a concrete implementation plan for broader educational reforms.
