Simey Olvera replaced in Mexican Senate Board of Directors

Mexican Senator Simey Olvera Bautista has been replaced as secretary of the Senate's Board of Directors. She is succeeded by Claudia Tello Espinoza, following a vote of 96 in favor.

The leadership change follows controversy surrounding Olvera's recent legislative report in Ixmiquilpan, Hidalgo, where she was accompanied by actress Tamara Henaine. Henaine performed as ‘Claudita’, a character that imitates President Claudia Sheinbaum. While the appearance sparked social media criticism regarding the use of presidential parodies in political acts, President Sheinbaum stated she saw no ‘bad intention’ in the gesture and noted it was done in a ‘healthy manner.’

Olvera has denied that her removal from the Board is a disciplinary sanction, asserting that the change was a pre-arranged agreement within her parliamentary group to allow her to focus on other legislative responsibilities, such as the Commission of Legislative Studies. President Sheinbaum has also requested that the National Electoral Institute (INE) determine the legal validity of using such imitations during electoral processes.
