Mexican Senate leadership change involving Simey Olvera

Morena Senator Simey Olvera Bautista faced public criticism following her second labor report in Ixmiquilpan, Hidalgo. The controversy centered on the presence of actress Tamara Henaine, who performed as ‘Claudita’, an impersonator of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. Critics on social media questioned the use of a parody character during a formal legislative event and suggested the report functioned as a premature campaign launch for Olvera Bautista’s potential gubernatorial candidacy.

Following this controversy, the Mexican Senate appointed Claudia Tello Espinoza as the new secretary of the Mesa Directiva for the third year of the LXVI Legislature. Tello Espinoza, a Morena party member and former Secretary of Education for Veracruz, was approved unanimously with 96 votes, replacing Olvera Bautista.

Regarding the controversy, President Sheinbaum stated she saw no ‘bad intention’ in the gesture and noted it was done in a ‘healthy manner.’ However, the President has requested that the National Electoral Institute (INE) determine the legal validity of using such imitations during electoral processes. Olvera has denied that her replacement on the Board is a disciplinary sanction, asserting the change was a pre-arranged agreement within her parliamentary group to allow her to focus on other legislative responsibilities, such as the Commission of Legislative Studies.
