A66 crash kills seven people, including two police officers
A fatal wrong-way collision on the A66 near Middlesbrough has resulted in seven deaths, including two police officers, PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38. The crash occurred when a Volkswagen Passat, which was being pursued by police, entered the wrong side of the dual carriageway and struck the officers' marked vehicle. The five occupants of the Passat—Michael Robert Cahill, 23; Jacob Matusiak, 23; Makai Saddington, 18; Theo Rae, 17; and Cole Robert Worthy, 17—were also killed at the scene.
Cleveland Police have arrested 12 people, including nine men and three women, ranging in age from 19 to 61. The suspects face various charges, including possession of a firearm and participation in an organized crime group. Investigators noted that the Volkswagen Passat was suspected of using cloned number plates to evade detection.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an investigation into the circumstances of the crash. Authorities have also highlighted concerns regarding social media content that glorifies dangerous driving, with reports suggesting one of the deceased was involved in filming such videos. The UK government has urged platforms like TikTok to remove content that celebrates reckless driving behavior.
