A66 collision and organized crime investigation near Teessid

Overview

On August 22, a head-on collision occurred on the A66 near Middlesbrough, northeast England, at approximately 3:39 am. The crash involved a Volkswagen Passat traveling the wrong way on a dual carriageway, which struck a marked Cleveland Police armed response vehicle. The incident resulted in seven fatalities: two police officers, PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38, and five young occupants of the Passat: Michael Robert Cahill, 23; Theo Rae, 17; Cole Robert Worthy, 17; Jacob Matusiak, 23; and Makai Saddington, 18. Preliminary reports indicate the collision followed a police pursuit of the Passat, and Cleveland Police stated the five men who died may have had links to “serious and organised criminal activity”.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched a mandatory investigation into the circumstances of the pursuit. In response to a surge in criminal activity, including vehicle arson and property ramming, approximately 200 reinforcement officers were deployed to the area. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced an additional £2 million for Cleveland Police to combat serious and organised crime, though some political figures have criticized the amount as inadequate.

Funeral services have been held for PC Blades and PC Clough. Lauren Somerville, Chair of the Cleveland Police Federation, described PC Clough as being ‘so full of fun’ and someone who ‘gave everything to everybody.’ Community fundraising for the families of the fallen officers has now exceeded £1.2 million. King Charles III has written to the families to express his condolences, and Middlesbrough FC has called on supporters to pay tribute to the officers.
