Champagne region records earliest grape harvest due to extreme heat
The Champagne region in France is experiencing its earliest grape harvest on record due to intense heatwaves and unseasonably warm temperatures throughout 2026. The official harvest season is set to begin as early as August 15, significantly ahead of the traditional September or October window.
Climate change is accelerating grape maturation, leading to rapid sugar accumulation and potentially lower acidity levels. This poses a risk to the signature flavor profile of Champagne, which relies on high acidity, elegance, and low sugar. Viticulturists face a difficult balance between harvesting early to manage sugar levels and waiting to ensure proper phenolic ripeness.
In response to these climatic challenges and economic uncertainty, the Comité Champagne has implemented several measures. The marketable yield limit for the 2026 harvest has been reduced to 8,800kg per hectare, marking the fourth consecutive reduction. Additionally, producers have been granted temporary authorization to increase the purchase of external harvests, musts, or wines by up to 15%, up from the usual 5%, to help meet production volumes following significant losses from spring frosts.
