Climate change and drought impact North Rhine-Westphalia
North Rhine-Westphalia is facing significant environmental challenges due to climate change and ongoing drought conditions. The NRW-Stiftung has approved up to 300,000 euros to fund a model project led by the Association of Biological Stations. This initiative aims to implement practical nature conservation measures to mitigate climate change effects and address the biodiversity crisis, noting that approximately 45 percent of investigated species in the region are threatened or extinct.
Soil moisture data from the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research indicates a mixed landscape. While northern areas maintain normal moisture levels, the central and southern regions, particularly around Düsseldorf and Duisburg, are experiencing moderate to severe drought at depths of up to 1.80 meters. Recent rainfall averaged only 8.4 millimeters per week, which is insufficient to replenish deeper soil layers. These conditions pose risks to agricultural yields and increase forest fire hazards.
