Climate change drives global butterfly migration to higher altitudes

A major international study published in the journal Nature reveals that climate change is reshaping the global distribution of butterfly species. The research, involving 68 experts, analyzed over 6,100 distribution changes across 1,758 species on every continent.

Findings indicate that rising temperatures and extreme weather events are driving species to migrate toward higher altitudes. In the Alpine region, biologists such as Elia Guariento from Eurac Research have observed species like the Apollo butterfly colonizing higher elevations where they were previously absent.

While temperature increases drive range expansion, population declines are frequently linked to land-use changes, including intensive agriculture and the loss of wetlands. These shifts represent a significant signal of how the climate crisis is rapidly altering biodiversity and ecosystem balances.
