Global butterfly distribution shifts due to climate change

The findings attribute about 79% of these distribution changes to climate change and extreme weather events. While many species are expanding their ranges, there is a noted trend of migration toward higher altitudes, such as the Apollo butterfly colonizing higher elevations in the Alpine region.

Researchers noted that while temperature increases drive range expansion, population declines are frequently linked to land-use changes, including intensive agriculture, habitat fragmentation, and the loss of wetlands. The study emphasizes that butterflies serve as early indicators of ecosystem health and biodiversity shifts caused by the climate crisis.
