Climate change identified as top future threat in Brazil study

A new study titled ‘Termômetro do Brasil’, conducted by Instituto Oyá in partnership with Ipsos, reveals that 41% of Brazilians view climate change as the greatest threat to the future. This concern surpasses other major issues, including job loss (32%), democratic regression (32%), health deterioration (31%), and food scarcity (30%).

Despite the long-term concern regarding climate, when asked about immediate current concerns, climate change ranked ninth (14%) and environmental threats ranked tenth (10%).

The research also highlighted significant vulnerabilities regarding information. Approximately 78% of respondents were unable to distinguish between fake news and true information, particularly concerning extreme weather events. Additionally, 81% of Brazilians expressed fear regarding the use of deepfakes and artificial intelligence for the manipulation of voice and image. Camila Kamilo, executive director of Instituto Oyá, noted a trend where 67% of Brazilians trust technology while 65% distrust governments.
