Climate change impacts agricultural yields and commodity prices
Climate change is increasingly impacting the agricultural sector, with extreme weather, prolonged droughts, and high temperatures affecting crop yields and commodity prices. In Europe, major producers such as France, Germany, and Spain are facing reduced harvests due to drought and fires, contributing to rising grain and corn prices on the Paris international exchange.
Martin Hubinský, senior segment manager for agriculture at VÚB banka, noted that while domestic yield decreases do not mechanically transfer to consumer food prices, the final cost is influenced by global commodity prices, import availability, energy, transport, and processing margins. To adapt to this new reality, agricultural enterprises must invest in irrigation, water retention measures, and more efficient farming technologies.
