A record-strength Super El Niño is expected to cause volatile weather patterns that could damage crops worldwide.

In the United States, these pressures are manifesting in the agricultural sector. Chapter 12 bankruptcy filings for family farms and fisheries rose to 336 in the year ending June 30. Economists at the American Farm Bureau Federation project that national average returns for nine major crops could face a $32 billion shortfall against expenses in 2027. Researchers note these bankruptcies are a lagging indicator of accumulated pressures, including high interest rates, elevated input costs, and low commodity prices.
