Climate change impacts agriculture in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro

Agricultural producers in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro are facing severe challenges due to climate change and prolonged droughts.

In the Una-Sana Canton of Bosnia and Herzegovina, beekeepers report a multi-year decline in honey yields. Nisvet Mujanović, President of the Beekeepers Union of USK, stated that extreme temperature fluctuations and droughts have caused the loss of bee colonies. While the current season has shown improvement, Mujanović emphasized that the sector remains unstable and relies heavily on government subsidies to remain economically viable.

In Montenegro, livestock breeders in the Pljevlja region are struggling with a lack of sufficient hay and grass for animal feed. Milko Živković, President of the Union of Livestock Breeders of Northern Montenegro, warned that high market prices for hay and grain, combined with poor crop yields, could lead to a significant reduction in the regional livestock population. He called for increased state intervention to help farmers manage rising costs and feed shortages.
