Climate change impacts European nuclear energy production

Extreme heat and drought across Europe are impacting the reliability of nuclear power generation. High river temperatures and low water levels have forced several facilities to reduce power or shut down entirely to protect local ecosystems and ensure safe cooling.

In France, EDF has had to adjust production at the Golfech and Saint-Alban plants due to temperature limits on the Garonne and Rhône rivers. In Switzerland, Axpo reduced output at the Beznau plant as the Aare river reached 25 °C. Romania's Nuclearelectrica implemented a preventive shutdown of unit 1 at the Cernavodă plant because of critically low Danube levels. Additionally, Hungary has faced challenges with its sole nuclear plant due to low water levels, and Slovenia has reduced production due to high temperatures and low flow in the Sava river.

To address these climate-driven vulnerabilities, EDF has announced an investment of 9 billion euros over the next 15 years to adapt its nuclear units to changing environmental conditions.
