Overview

Severe summer droughts and extreme heatwaves across Europe have significantly strained the regional power grid by impacting both hydroelectric and nuclear energy production. To combat these climate-driven vulnerabilities, the French utility EDF announced a 9 billion euro investment plan over 15 years to adapt its nuclear units. Meanwhile, energy companies like Emerald Horizon have proposed new technologies, such as the SMRX system, to address the “fundamental design flaw” where both hydro and nuclear power rely on the same water resources and fail simultaneously during droughts.
