Climate change intensifies extreme weather across Europe

Research from the ClimXtreme project, coordinated by the Free University of Berlin, indicates that extreme weather events such as heatwaves, droughts, and heavy rainfall are becoming more frequent in Europe due to global warming. Scientists noted that recent heatwaves, which saw temperatures exceed 40 degrees Celsius in countries including Spain, France, and Germany, would have been impossible without climate change. The project concludes that such extreme heat events are likely to become the new summer normal in the coming decades.

In the Austrian region of Tyrol, experts are discussing adaptation strategies to combat shifting precipitation patterns, receding glaciers, and increased natural hazards. During a recent forum in Innsbruck, specialists emphasized that proactive planning, conscious construction methods, and the protection of natural resources—such as soil, water, and forests—are essential to mitigating the impacts of extreme weather and managing the balance between drought and flooding.
