UK heatwave persists, bans widen as rain approaches

Entities: Yorkshire Water · UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) · Southern Water · Natural Resources Wales · National Fire Chiefs Council

Overview

The high‑pressure ridge that has driven temperatures in southern England into the low‑30s °C continues to dominate the British Isles. On 23 July, Thames Water imposed a temporary hose‑pipe ban on roughly 16 million customers in London, the Thames Valley and the Home Counties, while South East Water kept a similar restriction on about 2.4 million customers in Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire. Together, more than 20 million people are now subject to water‑saving measures, the largest‑scale restriction of the season. Reservoirs remain around 79 % of their long‑term averages, with several sites classified as “exceptionally low”. The Environment Agency has declared prolonged dry weather across eight English regions, moving parts of southern, central and eastern England toward official drought status. On 24 July, Thames Water announced a further temporary hose‑pipe ban for its 10.1 million London customers, covering non‑essential outdoor uses such as garden irrigation and car washing, with exemptions for health, animal‑welfare and essential needs. Seven other English water utilities have introduced comparable bans. Two days later, Irish Water issued hose‑pipe bans in parts of South Tipperary, Dublin and other counties, imposing fines for breaches. In the UK, eight water companies have kept restrictions in place despite recent rain, prompting criticism of private water‑company models and calls for renationalisation. The Met Office now forecasts a band of low pressure bringing heavy showers to much of the UK on Sunday, with further rain spreading southeast over the weekend. Areas such as North Wales, Greater Manchester, Scotland and northern England could see intense bursts of up to 30 mm hour⁻¹, while the south is expected to stay relatively dry. Temperatures are still projected to reach the high‑20s to low‑30s °C, and a separate outlook suggests another heatwave in August with peaks of 38‑39 °C in parts of England.
