UK and Europe face intensifying heatwaves and drought

Overview

The UK and Europe continue to face intensifying heatwaves and drought. The UK’s 2026 summer was provisionally recorded as the hottest since 1884, with a mean temperature of 16.5°C. The Met Office noted this extreme weather was approximately 130 times more likely due to human-induced climate change. By August, 71.3% of England was in drought, causing significant crop losses for flower growers and raising food shortage concerns.

Across Europe, extreme heat has resulted in significant excess mortality. Preliminary data suggests at least 35,000 excess deaths continent-wide, including approximately 14,000 in Germany, 7,300 in France, and nearly 5,000 in Spain. In Belgium, Sciensano reported over 2,500 excess deaths, with Brussels experiencing its highest heat-related death toll since 2000.

In Spain, the impact of wildfires remains severe, with over 650,000 hectares burned in the EU. While some regional heat alerts in Galicia have been deactivated, extreme temperature anomalies persist, such as in Mallorca where temperatures were 2.5°C above the historical average.

In Mexico, the state of Tamaulipas has recorded 128 cases of heat-related illnesses and four deaths.

A study published in The Lancet, analyzing over 800 cities, confirms that heat-related mortality has increased in 98.7% of studied European urban centers. Southern Europe has seen a 161% increase in heat-related mortality, while Western Europe saw an average of 64 additional deaths per million inhabitants. The report also highlights rising risks from allergic pollen, Vibrio bacteria, and a 369.3% increase in climate suitability for dengue in Eastern Europe. Researchers warn that while greening initiatives have reduced urban surface heat in many large cities, adaptation efforts are stalling due to political and economic barriers.

Claims

What the coverage asserts, and how many sources carry each claim.

Coverage disagrees

Sources make claims that cannot both be true. CLSTR reports the disagreement; it does not decide who is right.

  • "El Niño is not contributing to Europe’s current heat because tropical Pacific conditions are currently neutral."

    vs

"El Niño conditions in the Pacific are contributing to rising ocean temperatures."

The first claim asserts El Niño is contributing to rising ocean temperatures, while the second claims El Niño is not contributing to heat because conditions are neutral.
