Nepal-Tibet floods linked to climate change and glacier collapse

A scientific study by World Weather Attribution (WWA) has concluded that climate change played a critical role in the devastating floods that struck the Nepal-China border in August. The disaster was triggered by the collapse of approximately 200,000 square metres of glacier and rock from the Langtang Lirung mountain, which released massive amounts of water and debris into the valleys.

Researchers identified a 'compound crisis' of geological and climatic factors. Decades of atmospheric warming have caused glacier retreat and shifted the freeze line upward by roughly 100 meters every ten years, leading to the thawing of permafrost that previously stabilized mountain walls. This instability was likely exacerbated by structural damage from a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in 2015.

The report notes that the months preceding the disaster, July and August 2026, were the warmest on record for the region. The catastrophe resulted in significant loss of life, with reports indicating over 1,300 deaths and thousands missing across Nepal and Tibet. Economic impacts in Nepal are estimated to be substantial, with some assessments placing physical and economic damage at billions of dollars.
