Overview
Following the catastrophic glacial collapse on August 26 that devastated the Bhotekoshi river basin, Nepal’s death toll has risen to at least 1,400 confirmed dead, with over 5,000 people reported missing. The disaster impacted Nepal’s Rasuwa and Nuwakot regions as well as China’s Tibet region, causing widespread destruction to major roads, dozens of bridges, and multiple hydropower plants.
Nepal’s Foreign Ministry has refined reconstruction estimates, placing the total cost at approximately $4.78 billion. This budget is divided into $57.67 million for immediate recovery and relief over the next six months, and $4.71 billion for long-term reconstruction. The energy and transport sectors remain the most heavily impacted, requiring massive investment to restore the electrical grid and damaged infrastructure.
In response to the devastation, Nepal’s leadership continues to demand international climate justice. Prime Minister Balendra Shah intends to address the United Nations General Assembly to advocate for climate reparations, noting that the nation contributes only 0.1% to global emissions. This follows previous calls from Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal and President Ramchandra Paudel to treat financial assistance as a debt owed by wealthy nations rather than charity. Local relief efforts are also active, including a donation of NPR 2.11 crore and emergency shelter supplies from Prabhu Bank to the PM Disaster Relief Fund.
